A Summer Exhibition featuring the fantastic work of Julia Christie & Glen Craig GLEN CRAIG SCOTTISH WATERCOLOUR ARTIST
ARTIST’S STATEMENT Glen Craig I work in watercolours using the Scottish landscape as my inspiration. I trained as an architect at Dundee University and was touched by the spirit of the ‘art’ college. Finding the curve of a straight line is my personal spin on architectural convention. My work attempts to engage the viewer, evoking a feeling, a sense of place, an atmosphere, an unexpected detail and... most importantly, raise a smile and warm the heart of the viewer. I am rewarded by new challenges, and my journey of discovery continues. Glen was born in Perthshire. He graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, in Dundee, and ran an architectural practice for many years before a slight shift of emphasis to a more ‘rewarding’ career of creativity in 2004. Glen works from his home in Fife where he produces original watercolours, prints and art cards.
‘LAPPING SEA AIR’ Watercolour on paper. Artwork size: 29 cm x 29 cm. Inspired by sailing the Mediterranean Sea. Villages perched on steep terrain and peoples transport, and life, based on the water. Bright light and full of colour and energy. [not that much different to the east neuk or the western isles....!] ‘SIDE BY SIDE’ Watercolour on paper. Artwork size: 29 cm x 29 cm. Inspired by gazing into the crystal clear rock pools on the islands of our west coast of Scotland. Sun on my back and mesmerised by the abundant life off our Islands. I guess I wanted to jump into the water. It looked so inviting. I drew a sketch that evening and mused to myself that if I were a fish.... that is where I would want to swim! The watercolour tries to capture that place and the joy I felt by finding it.
JULIA CHRISTIE Julia Christie trained as an illustrator and obtained a first class honours degree at Manchester Polytechnic in 1984. She worked for many years in this field and illustrated numerous books including Alice in Wonderland for Octopus Books. Over the years she moved away from the intricate style she had developed into larger and more expressive works.
Julia loves the stunning dramatic beauty and unique quality of light on the Isle of Skye, she recently moved to the Island from Gloucestershire where she exhibited and taught art for over 28 years, she is now living and working in Ardvasar home of her ancestors and where she spent many happy childhood holidays.
