A colourful Exhibition by two Contemporary Artists Martin Oates & Brian Phillips
Martin Oates was born in Glasgow in 1952 and his talent for drawing was evident from an early age, when he was rarely seen without a pencil and paper in hand.
Athough largely self-taught, he is now a well-known exhibiting artist with work in many galleries and private collections he spends half his year painting Scotland`s varied landscape, and the other half in his studio in La Casa Celtica, Ronda, Andalusia, Spain.
Martin has developed a unique style in watercolour landscape painting and his work is instantly recognizable. His unconventional approach and technique produces work that is both intense and dramatic.
Brian Phillips breaks the basic rules of painting in his humorous way. His paintings are recognisable as his own fresh exiting humorous works of Art
Brian was born in Manchester in 1939. At 14 he left school feeling very thick (his words) and got a job on a Manchester Advertising Agency where he worked first as an office boy and then as a commercial artist.
At the age of 16 he was the youngest artist to have had work on show at Stockport Art Gallery in 1955.
Later in life he became self employed doing murals and art workshops with children, the elderly and the mentally ill. He has since worked in the Health Services and also ran the Start In Bury project (an art studio for the mentally ill) before moving to Scotland in September 2000.
His work now is entirely Scottish based and inspired ... the Highlands are hypnotic, he often says.
